September 30th -3rd grade

10/3/2022 8:30 pm

In September students are focusing on learning about our fall crops and the parts of the plant that we eat.  Ask your third graders  about the roots, stems, flowers and leaves that we eat!

While in the garden today students learned about the parts of the plants that they eat and looked at examples of several. They ventured out into the gardens to see what sprouts we had growing (radishes). They planted several different kinds of seeds - beans, peas, carrots, beets, radish, chard, turnips, kale, spinach, lettuces. They also planted two cauliflower seedlings and two broccoli seedlings. They observed the sunflower sprouts that have started to emerge as well, along with one bluebonnet sprout.

1st garden day for 3rd grade September 1st

9/15/2022 10:30 pm

In August/September students are focusing on hummingbirds. The fall migration of hummingbirds through Texas is from July through late August and often early September. Students learned all about the characteristics of birds, what makes hummingbirds unique from other birds, pollination, animal adaptations and migration.

Did you know that hummingbirds are the only bird that can hover or fly backwards?

While in the garden today students were able to observe monarch butterflies, swallowtail butterflies, monarch caterpillars and eggs, small toads, dragonflies, and ants. In the morning before the students arrived they saw a bunny. The students helped to turn the newly purchased soil in all of the beds with shovels. They also were able to remove a seed from a sunflower head from last seasons crop to continue the life cycle of the sunflower. They planted them in the butterfly beds. Some students planted zinnia seeds. They dug up the sweet potatoes that were planted at the end of last year. The vines were magnificent. The sweet potatoes however were very small. The sweet potato slips that they used were from potatoes that 3rd grade teachers started in their classroom with store bought potatoes. This year they will try sweet potato slips that are not store bought.

1st garden day for 2nd grade September 15th

In September students are focusing on learning about our fall crops and the parts of the plant that we eat.  Ask your 2nd grader about roots, stems, flowers and leaves that we eat!

While in the garden today students learned all about what parts of plants we eat (root, stem, leaves, flowers, seeds). They were shocked that we eat all of those parts. While in the gardens they turned the soil and added nutrients to most of the beds. They were able to plant either carrot or radish seeds in the vegetable beds.  Some groups planted some parsley seeds in the herb bed. Others planted flower seeds in the butterfly beds. There was a monarch caterpillar in the early morning and a monarch butterfly during the afternoon for the kids to observe. Dragonflies were plentiful as well. We smelled the herbs in the herb bed. Some groups discussed the weather conditions and what makes our gardens grow. (water, sun, space, nutrients, air) The gardens are marked with labels -- most of them don't have seeds yet. (Radish, carrot, Flowers, Parsley) - - were all planted today.
