3rd grade garden day May 5th

Note from our garden Teacher:
During Garden Day the students participated in a discussion about sunflowers and their life cycle. The students got to choose two different seeds to tape to their paper to take home. We ventured out into the gardens to finally dig up the potatoes that had been in the ground since February. SUCCESS!! Each class was able to dig some potatoes and the total pounds was a little over 29 pounds. I would say that is a great harvest in a 5 foot round bed. The kids were impressed too. We will save those potatoes until second grade harvests theirs in a couple of weeks. Then we will combine the two harvests and the cafeteria will serve them to both groups on the same day. I will let you know when I have that date. The students removed some bluebonnet seed pods, watched the poppy seeds pour from their seed pod, viewed the crops growing in the beds, observed monarch caterpillars, and colored their pictures with petals from the marigolds and leaves trimmed from the tomatoes. It was a busy day and some kids wished they could have stayed longer.
Many of the seeds that we have planted in your garden have sprouted and look great! In your garden you have okra, squash, potatoes, cilantro, tomatoes, basil, other herbs, onions, peppers, cucumbers, beans, watermelon and lots of flowers growing
